Fragments from Day Two of Pure Music Experience Music Fest at Reference

Five dollars admission for two days of music, 29 bands!

I arrived initially at 1 PM, the advertised start time. Edward told me it would be starting at 3. I was grateful for the extra time. I headed back at 3 PM. The first band was Cat Sex with Dylan Mulshine from Charlottesville. Dylan has performed around here under the names of Rhythm Bandit, Teen Dreams, Raw Moans, and probably more. Today he was playing with a drummer.

The second band was Mutwawa, beats and noise made by long-time Richmond music veterans Gary Stevens [Headmolt, Rat Ward] and Jason Hodges [Amoeba Men, Suppression, Bermuda Triangles].

Third was Josh Vliet performing as Symbols and Pencils. A man with an acoustic guitar.

Alvez played some mellow ambient and laptop music and showed projections on the wall.

I left for a few hours, from 6 - 9 PM. When I got back it was time for Distance of Sex, one man [Travis Miller] with keyboards, beats, good stuff.

Nidra was Philip White, the guy running around with the mic, with a drum machine, and his younger brother on guitar.

A solid set from the Bermuda Triangles. Liking the new songs. First show with new drummer, Tony Lynch, who also plays with Caves Caverns.

Les La Britanica rocked the hip hop style.

Lost Tribe was the final act of the night.

HRM Live at Twisters from 10 Years Ago!

HRM - Live at Twisters - July 13, 2001 - Richmond, Virginia from Silver Persinger.

This is a pretty poor quality video. Filmed in 2001 with a handheld still camera with a maximum recording time of 1 minute, I think I only used a 32 MB memory stick at the time. This video is made up of 30 short clips, many of them were filmed vertically. (Don't know why I did that, I hadn't filmed very much video is my guess.)

Just really putting this up because I "found" this material yesterday while cleaning up my room, and I currently upload videos of bands all the time now as a hobby. I thought it would be cool to share one of the oldest existing recordings of live music that I've made. I don't recall ever having recorded bands back then. I used to take lots of photos back then. Funny that it does reveal a predisposition to filming live music, 9 years ago!

Since the video may be a headache to watch and there's not much to see -- it's dark, low res, and vertically challenged, the MP3 may be a better overview of this material.

My First Public Street Performance

The Really, Really Free Market is a monthly event organized by local anarchists where people donate whatever they no longer need, and others are free to pickup what they want for free. For more information about the Free Market or to get involved, visit their facebook page.

The event happened from 1-3 PM but actually continued until 3:30ish. I got set up and started playing a couple of minutes after 2 PM. In all, I ended up playing about one hour, 35 minutes. It was fun. I didn't set up a donation bucket so there was no expectation of donations. I did receive other rewards. I saw one guy tapping his foot, I saw a woman walking down the other side of the street and either smiling or laughing which I think was caused by my playing. It was also interesting how people would ignore me or avoid eye contact. After I finished playing, one person (and possibly more) briefly clapped. Then four of the anarchists came up to me and thanked me for playing.

So it was a success. No police harassment. Also my battery pack lasted the entire performance powering 3 foot pedals and an amplifier. I was happy about that.

Here are the complete unedited recordings:

Part 1 (15 minutes)
A guy asked me if my guitar was in tune, that's when I played an "E" chord. He wanted to borrow my guitar to show me how it was done, I said no thanks.

Part 2 (1 hour)
35 minutes into Part 2, a kid asked to borrow my guitar and he played a bit of a Blink 182 song.

Part 3 (25 minutes)

I'm not a really big R & B kind of guy, but I believe this is the best live show I've ever seen. Eryka's voice is precise and flawless, she is graceful and has a very dynamic way of dancing while she sings. I've been describing it to friends as grand and muted. Her movements were also synchronized with the light show. She is a thrill to watch.
